TROPEA, Italy–You'd never arrive here by accident.
A lengthy drive from the nearest highway in the underdeveloped southern region of Calabria, Tropea transforms itself into a popular beach resort every August.
For the other 11 months, it's used mainly as a stopover point for travellers heading to Sicily from the Italian mainland.
But to imply that Tropea is nothing more than an effective rest stop is to do it an enormous disservice. Its historic centre is as labyrinthine and beautiful as anything south of the Amalfi Coast.
